GET YOUR PUMPKIN FROM THE PUMPKIN PATCH AT THE FOX RIVER TROLLEY MUSEUM

Take a trip to Halloweens past aboard the Fox River Trolley Museum's Pumpkin Trolley!

One of the museum's most popular events each year, special Pumpkin Trolleys operate Oct. 13, 14, 20 and 21 at the museum, just a short drive away on Route 31 in South Elgin.

Take a ride into the past through the gentle hills along the Fox River and in Kane County's Jon J. Duerr Forest Preserve aboard one of the Fox River Trolley Museum's historic trolleys to the Pumpkin Patch at Coleman Yard.

Choose a pumpkin, take in the fall colors, and take a photo in the Pumpkin Patch! Hundreds of pumpkins await children and adults alike. Pumpkins are $1 apiece, in addition to regular fares.

“We have parents each year who wait to get one of their pumpkins with their children at the Coleman Yard Pumpkin Patch,” said Bob Bresse-Rodenkirk, event coordinator.

Passengers can board at both ends of the line for all trips. Trains will leave the northerly Castlemuir terminal, on Illinois Route 31 in South Elgin, from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. Trains leave from Blackhawk station in the Jon Duerr Forest Preserve, on Route 31 in St. Charles Twp., from roughly 11:15 a.m. until 4:45 p.m., Bresse-Rodenkirk said.

The Pumpkin Trolley weekends won't be the end of the fun at the museum this year.

The Haunted Trolley returns the weekend of Oct. 27-28, during regular museum hours. It's a spooky good time for children of all ages!

Reserve a spot now on the Halloween Hiawatha Ghost Story Train, at 4:30, 5:45 and 7 p.m. Oct. 27 and 28. The reserved-seating, after-hours Ghost Story Trains entertain children, their daddies and mummies! Those who dare can experience a campfire along the shores of the Fox River with ghoulishly delightful ghost stories. Tickets are selling fast, and some trains have sold out, so act now! Ghost Story Train fares are $8 for adults and $7 for children 1-11.

Early reservations also are a must for the Polar Express, Dec. 1, 2, 8, 15 and 16, at 4, 5:05 and 6:10 p.m. Last year, extra trains were added but all sold out weeks in advance; several of this year's trains are sold out. Chris Van Allsberg's best selling book comes alive aboard the museum's sleek trains. Cookies and hot cocoa await everyone! Trains board at Blackhawk station in the Jon Duerr Forest Preserve, just off Route 31 in St. Charles Twp., for the ride north to meet Santa.

Advance reservations are necessary for the Ghost Story Train and the Polar Express by writing the museum special events coordinator, at P.O. Box 315, South Elgin, IL 60177-0315 or by visiting the museum's Reservations page at Our reservations page.

No tickets will be sold the night of Ghost Story Train or Polar Express events, and no reservations can be taken over the phone.

The Fox River Trolley Museum is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to perpetuating the memories of Chicago's once-burgeoning electric railroad industry. Cars in operation or on display represent all of Chicago's major interurban (inter-city) electric railways, “L” and streetcar lines. All museum workers are volunteers dedicated to recreating a bygone era.

The museum, at 361 S. LaFox St., on Route 31 in South Elgin, is open on operating days 11 a.m. until 5 p.m., except as noted. Regular fares are $3.50 for adults, $2 both for senior citizens and for children ages 3-11. Children under 3 ride free.
