HAVE THIS SUMMER’S LAST PICNIC AT THE FOX RIVER TROLLEY MUSEUM AND JON DUERR FOREST PRESERVE
It’s time for that last picnic of summer, and there’s no better way to do it than by taking a trip Labor Day weekend to the Fox River Trolley Museum in South Elgin.
“We’ll be laboring on Labor Day to make sure you have a good time,” said Bob Bresse-Rodenkirk, one of the museum volunteers who will be operating trains on Monday, Sept. 6.
The Museum’s trains leave from Castlemuir station in South Elgin and go directly to the picnic grove of the Jon Duerr Forest Preserve, (formerly Blackhawk Forest Preserve) in St. Charles Township on the banks of the Fox River.
The museum’s colorful antique Chicago “L” cars and interurban (long distance) electric railway cars will ply the rails of its 108-year-old rail line from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. all three days on Labor Day weekend. The museum’s rail line hugs the scenic Fox River. Visitors can inspect an Illinois Central R.R. caboose and other museum rail cars, and hike on the Jon Duerr Forest Preserve’s trails, returning to later trains at no extra charge.
Fares are $3.50 for adults, and $2 for seniors and for children 3-11. Children under three years of age ride for free.
After Labor Day weekend, the museum reverts to Sunday-only operation for the rest of September.
The museum is an Illinois not-for-profit organization formed in 1961 to preserve the colorful heritage of Chicago’s historic network of electric railways. It is located at 361 S. LaFox St., on Illinois Route 31, in South Elgin, easily accessible from Interstate 88 or 90 or U.S. 20. For further information, or to charter a train, call (847) 697-4676.
